Midwife or

Health
Should supplements containing iodine be recommended to consumers?
Due to an increased need
for iodine in pregnancy and breastfeeding, the Ministry recommends that pregnant and
breastfeeding women take a registered 150
micrograms (mcg) daily iodine only tablet daily available from 1 July 2010 at
pharmacies, as well as eating foods which are important sources of iodine. More
information can be found in the pamphlet Folic Acid and
Iodine
Screening in pregnancy
Whether or not to participate in screening is your choice.Screening can provide some information about the chance
of
your baby having Down syndrome or another condition.
See the First Trimester Combined Screening Information Pamphlet
First Trimester Combined
Screening Information Pamphlet
There are two screening options available:
First Trimester Combined Screening
This new option combines the results from a blood test taken in the first three months of pregnancy and a nuchal
translucency (NT) scan with other information, such as your age and weight, to give a risk result.
Second Trimester Maternal Serum Screening
This improved option combines the results from a blood test taken in the second three months of pregnancy, with
other
information, such as your age and weight, to give a risk result. This screen is more accurate than the older MSS2
test
as it measures four chemicals in the blood instead of three.
Antenatal HIV screening
Antenatal HIV screening, along with five other blood tests, is offered to all pregnant women as a routine part of
their antenatal care.
Women who are found to have HIV can be offered treatment to reduce the chance that they will transmit the virus to
the baby.
The number of people with HIV in NZ is low, but increasing. All pregnant women are offered an HIV test at the same
time as they have their other pregnancy blood tests.
This programme aims to ensure all women are offered HIV screening along with their first pregnancy blood tests, so
that transmission of the virus from mother to baby can be prevented.

Questions and Answers
Please send us your
questions and we will try to provide you with information or links to web sites that can answer them. Below are some
answers by Helen and Denise, both of which are registered Midwives and Childbirth Educators.
Hi, I'm pregnant with my second child and am really worried about the risk of mastitis during
pregnancy and following the birth. With my last child I developed 7 breast abscesses and had 6 surgeries.
It sounds like you have had a really awful time in the past and it would be good to get some expert
advice as soon as possible. Research states women who have had mastitis previously are likely to develop it again
with a future child. I have included a link to New Zealand Lactation Consultants Association Directory pdf.
http://www.nzlca.org.nz/NZLCA_Listing.pdf
It is important to report quickly any signs or symptoms. Such as
- Breast is warm to the touch, has a red tender area
- Feeling ill (flu like) with a temperature
- Area of breast is swelling/lumpy or pain/burning is present

continued breastfeeding for up to two years with complementary food and fluids.
The longer you exclusively breastfeed, the greater the benefits for your baby.

answers by Helen and Denise, both of which are registered Midwives and Childbirth Educators.
I'm pregnant and wondering when my memory will improve again, please.
Memory can be affected by exhaustion especially if you are not getting enough sleep at night.
Sometimes it helps to get rest midday if you can. People are usually understanding about pore short-term memory in
pregnancy. If something complicated or new is getting explained such as how to use an infant car capsules bring
someone else to also listen in, write things down or ask for written information. Tiredness can make you more
tearful also.

Please send us your

answers by Helen and Denise, both of which are registered Midwives and Childbirth Educators.
I have been told I have Group B Strep but I don't understand what that means and why it is a concern when you are
pregnant. The only thing I got told was go to hospital when my waters break.
Group B streptococcus (group B strep) is a bacteria which can be on your skin. If you have group B strep it can
infect your baby after your waters break. If there is a risk of infection then your LMC would talk to you about the
use of antibiotics when your waters have broken.
There is information www.everybody.co.nz use the search, or the
following link http://www.everybody.co.nz/page-4f3eebc2-1348-432a-ba67-4cea53163d36.aspx
I think it is important to go back to your LMC with a list of the questions that you want answered. You may find
they have a handout that you could take home and read..

Information
What are Normal Baby Movements in Pregnancy?
When should I be concerned?
According to Wikipedia, the free online encyclopaedia; 'movement of baby's limbs are noted by ultrasound scan as
early as 7 weeks gestation'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetal_movement. However it will be many more weeks before the
mother becomes aware of her baby's movements. They can be first felt as fluttery movements by 18-22 weeks for a
first baby; or earlier for a subsequent baby. As baby grows the movements become much stronger and can be felt as
strong kicks and even seen or felt.
It is normal and expected that an unborn baby moves its arms and legs and body or hiccups at least 10 times every two
hours. You may find that you are too busy to notice most movements. For larger women or women who have the placenta
on the anterior (front side of the uterus) feeling baby movements may be more difficult but you may feel slight
flutters- try to note what is normal for you.
A pregnant woman should keep a daily watch on their baby's movement patterns and normal routine and report if there
are any concerns about baby's activity. A lot of mothers report that their baby likes to move most in the late
evening after dinner or when they are trying to sleep at night.
Ask yourself what times does my baby wake every day? When are her/his alert times? How long does he/she kick for?
What's normal for my baby?
We need you to tell your Midwife, Doctor or ring Delivery Suite if there is a change in baby's normal patterns or
movements are slower or sluggish or greatly reduced. Do the traffic light test and report your concerns immediately.
A cause could be that baby's placenta which supplies oxygen and food to baby may be not working as well. Your baby
is relying on you to keep watch on his or her movements and get help if movements are different than normal.
Sometimes a mother reports the opposite -that her baby has very fast, very erratic movements that seem very strange
and worrying - please let your Midwife or Doctor know and make a plan to check on baby that day. Treat each day as a new day: If you have any concerns regarding movements the next day or a few days or a
week later
then please inform your Midwife or Doctor again and start the process again.
Traffic Light Test for Reduced Baby Movements
Drink a large glass of iced cold water, sit down or lie on your left side. Keep your hands on your baby and count
all baby movements. Count how many you feel in 2 hours ? Do they feel normal? Strong? Mild? or Weak?
If baby moves lots and the movements feel normal and you are reassured then keep a close eye on baby's movements for
next 4-8 hours, if you are completely satisfied that baby is fine then do nothing - but if you have any concerns
call
your Midwife, Doctor or Delivery Suite
If after the two hour Baby 'Traffic Light Check for Baby Movement Test' - you have 'only a few movements' or 'no
movements at all' and/ or you are Worried? Scared? Anxious? Call your Midwife or Hospital Delivery Suite now.
What will Happen? A normal antenatal assessment on the pregnant woman will be done: Temperature, blood pressure,
urine assessment, baby palpation, and fetal heart check. If both the Midwife and you are not reassured by this then:
- A CTG: cardio-tocograph machine tracing will record on paper 'baby's heart rate and fetal movements for twenty
minutes up to an hour to ascertain baby's general wellbeing.
- And/or An urgent ultrasound scan may be needed today to check the placenta, cord dopplers; That babies growth
and
babies movements are within normal ranges. A report will be faxed to your Midwife, Doctor or Hospital.
- Consultation with a hospital doctor/ specialist may be needed if there are still concerns for baby and a plan
will
be made as to what is best treatment for baby at that time. It may be daily CTG's until everyone is reassured
baby
is okay or it may be that an earlier delivery for baby than planned.

Helpful Hints
We would love to include your stories or helpful hints in this section. So often as Midwifes we hear: "I wish someone
had told me that..." Parenting is like travelling, it is always best to ask someone who has been there or is a
local. The books don't always give you that insider information or those little hints that make things easier.
Wheat Packs
Wheat packs for labouring women are great especially for long labours with backache. Try sitting on your warm wheat
pack in labour (on a Swiss ball), or wrapped around your lower stomach or back. Most Hospitals won't allow hot water
bottles for labouring women in case they burn themselves.
Wheat packs can be used in cots to keep it warm pre bed time during Winter, removing it before putting the baby down
to sleep. I know I go to sleep quicker if my bed is warm at night. Wheat bags can also be used for older children
for ear-ache which can be a problem during teething. Put 1/4 cup of water in microwave at same time as you warm the
wheat bag to produce steam this stops the wheat from going on fire and check temperature is not too hot before
using.
BirthResources has Wheat Bags for sale. To purchase one talk to the Midwife running your class.

answers by Helen and Denise, both of which are registered Midwives and Childbirth Educators.
Hi, I was wondering if you could point me towards some parents groups I am a single father of a 2 and a half year
old girl.
DIY Father. It is a group of fathers who set up a web site called
DIYFather.com - an online interactive forum for
Dads that offers resources, discussion groups and practical information about parenting from a male perspective.
They have a book named Call me Dad.
Also see http://fatherandchild.org.nz/wellington The Father &
Child Trust was founded in Christchurch in August 1997
by a group of dads who wanted to bring a male perspective into child-raising, and to address the lack of support for
New Zealand fathers.
Plunket offers parenting information and support as well as developmental assessments of your child. They have PEPE
parenting courses and Dads groups. See http://www.plunket.org.nz/plunket-near-you

Articles: Support Services
Sometimes being a parent can feel isolating and overwhelming. Sheila Kitzinger made this quote about what it is like
to be a mother "to take on one of the most emotionally and intellectually demanding, exasperating, strenuous,
anxiety-arousing and deeply satisfying tasks that any human being can undertake". This also applies to fathers.

Newborn Metabolic Screening Programme
The Newborn Metabolic Screening Programme screens for rare but potentially serious disorders such as phenylketonuria
(PKU), cystic fibrosis, and congenital hypothyroidism. A blood sample is taken from your baby's heel at 48 hours of
age
(the 'heel prick' or 'Guthrie' test). If a disorder is found, early treatment can prevent permanent damage or
death.

Metabolic Screening Programme here
Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Programme
Newborn hearing screening checks whether your baby hears well. If your baby has a hearing loss, finding it early is
good
for their language, learning and social development. When the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme is in place
throughout
the country, all 21 District Health Boards will offer screening free of charge.

Should supplements containing iodine be recommended to consumers?
Due to an increased need for iodine in pregnancy and breastfeeding, the Ministry recommends that pregnant and
breastfeeding women take a registered 150 micrograms (mcg) daily iodine only tablet daily available from 1 July
2010 at
pharmacies, as well as eating foods which are important sources of iodine. More information can be found in the
pamphlet
Folic Acid and Iodine
(www.healthed.govt.nz).
The "Power to Protect" website states:
Sometimes a baby just won't stop crying and almost all parents have times when they feel at breaking point.
Make a plan so you know what to do if your baby won't stop crying.
Understand why they cry
Crying is normal for a baby. It's their
way of communicating and doesn't mean they're being naughty. But sometimes a baby just won't stop crying, and almost
all parents have times when they feel like they're at breaking point.
If your baby is crying, go through
this checklist
- Does your baby need feeding or a
nappy change?
- Is your baby's clothing too tight?
- Are there signs that they might be
ill? - if so call a doctor.
- Are they teething?
- Make sure your baby isn't too hot or
cold.
Also try this:
- Burp your baby
- If they are young, wrap them in a
swaddle cloth
- Hold your baby close,
- Walk gently with them,
- Sing to them, or
- Try a soothing bath
- Try a walk outside in their stroller
or a drive around the block.
- If they still won't stop crying
count to ten and take a break. When you are ready, come back and comfort them.

Midwifery Programme
If you are a pregnant woman and you think
you might enjoy assisting a student along her journey to becoming a
midwife, please call us and we can talk you through the process. We have many eager students who would be thrilled
to share your experience! Please contact Suzanne Miller on 0800762786 or email Suzanne.miller@op.ac.nz
As first year students, the focus is on
gaining an understanding of pregnancy and childbirth from the perspective of
the woman and her family. So rather
than being "attached" to a midwife or other LMC (lead maternity carer), the student "follows-through" up to six
women for the duration of their childbearing experience.
BirthResources classes at times will have
student midwives come to observe the session.

Finding information
The Internet is now the biggest worldwide
information resource. There is so much information on it, the problem is
how
do you find what is relative to you as a parent in New Zealand.
Before I had my children I didn't know what
a toy library was or the difference between a playgroup and a
Play-centre,
let alone where you would find one. By using the Internet you can find out about entertainment and activities in
your
community. See finding information pages on www.babywebnz.org

We have added new link "Information Forms"

Our thoughts are with all the people in Christchurch, the people who have families and friends there and the many
people who are helping during this time of grief and stress.
We at BirthResources have been trying to think of ways we can help.
We are aware there is a reduced opportunity for people to attend childbirth education classes there. To assist with
this we have offered our DVD at below cost to organisations, are adding the booklet as a download from the
merchandise page, and plan to add more Youtube clips to our resources page. We have also given baby gear to one of
the Midwifery teams who are looking after pregnant woman who have come to Wellington. If you have spare baby

A number of screening tests are offered to help protect women and their babies. Pregnant women are offered HIV
screening and screening for Down syndrome and other conditions. Babies are screened for 28 metabolic disorders (the
heel prick test), and for hearing loss. The National Screening Unit website provides the following information:
http://www.nsu.govt.nz/current-nsu-programmes/3160.asp
Antenatal HIV Screening
Antenatal HIV screening, along with the other five antenatal blood tests, is offered to all pregnant women as a
routine part of their antenatal care. Most women in New Zealand will be found not to have HIV. Women who are found
to have HIV can then be offered treatment to reduce the chance that they will transmit the virus to the baby.

Screening here
Antenatal Screening for Down Syndrome and other conditions - Quality Improvements
All women have a choice to be screened for Down syndrome and other conditions in pregnancy. The National Screening
Unit is currently managing the development and implementation of quality improvements for antenatal screening for
Down syndrome and other conditions.

Down Syndrome and other conditions - Quality Improvements here
Newborn Metabolic Screening Programme
The Newborn Metabolic Screening Programme screens for rare but potentially serious disorders such as phenylketonuria
(PKU), cystic fibrosis, and congenital hypothyroidism. A blood sample is taken from your baby's heel at 48 hours of
age (the 'heel prick' or 'Guthrie' test). If a disorder is found, early treatment can prevent permanent damage or
death.
read more about Newborn
Metabolic Screening Programme here
Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Programme
Newborn hearing screening checks whether your baby hears well. If your baby has a hearing loss, finding it early is
good for their language, learning and social development. When the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme is in place
throughout the country, all 21 District Health Boards will offer screening free of charge.

I am 26 weeks pregnant and have an independent midwife. I'm just wondering if there is any source where I know what
exactly to expect from my midwife during my pregnancy, labour, birth and post birth?

http://www.birthresources.org/display/BirthResources/QandA
Nutrition page on Ministry of Health website
states:
Requirements for iodine increase during pregnancy and breastfeeding and even with a well balanced diet, it is
difficult
to get enough iodine from food alone. Women of child bearing age are encouraged to choose foods that are important
sources of iodine. These foods include seafood, commercially prepared bread, milk, eggs, meat and cereals and
seameal
custard. Ensure you follow food safety advice when eating these foods. For more information, refer to the Health
Education publication Eating
for Healthy Pregnant Women (HE1805).

About Women's Lifestyle Expo
A great day out for women of all ages The Women's Lifestyle Expo's have been well
anticipated weekends in New Zealand since 1996. Held as annual events in nine cities around New Zealand, the
Expos bring together an extensive variety of services and products aimed at today's women.
Most expos have more than 160 exhibitors featuring everything from jewellery and health products to business
opportunities & information, community groups, fitness & beauty products, food and wine sampling, homewares,
education providers and much more! Make it a day with the girls or take some time out for yourself ? Each expo
has a cafe for a relaxing coffee or lunch and active sites to participate in, whether that's a complete make
over, a massage or a spiritual reading, you are sure to leave inspired, energised and informed.
The Women's Lifestyle Expo's are in no way exclusively for women, in fact, there are many exhibitors who are men
and women are encouraged to bring their partners and friends along with them.
There are many competitions and draws to enter and with plenty of special deals from exhibitors, the Women's
Lifestyle Expo which is open over two days between 10am and 5pm is a major event not to be missed by women and
men alike.
The organisers are so confident that visitors will enjoy their Expo's that they offer anyone who does not find one thing of interest
to them a full refund on their entry fee. At this stage they are the only exhibition company worldwide to offer
this guarantee.

In the News
For years, debate has
raged about how to deal with crying babies - respond to them, or leave them to cry themselves to sleep
http://www.3news.co.nz/Research-Leaving-babies-to-cry-harms-their-brains/tabid/372/articleID/152526/Default.aspx

BirthResources encourages breastfeeding
because of the health benefits. If you wish to bottle-feed we will provide you with information individually when
requested.
The NZ food safety site states: "Breast
milk is best for babies and all mothers should be encouraged to breastfeed their babies. Breast milk contains all
the nutrition newborn babies need and breastfeeding benefits both the mother and the baby. However, parents who have
made the decision to feed their baby infant formula, either exclusively or in combination with breast milk, need
guidance on the safe preparation and storage of infant formula. Both expressed breast milk and infant formula need
careful preparation and storage to ensure they are safe." They outline the preparation and storage via this

If you are a pregnant woman and you think you might enjoy assisting a student along her journey to becoming a
midwife, please call us and we can talk you through the process. We have many eager students who would be thrilled
to share your experience! Please contact Suzanne Miller on 0800762786 or email Suzanne.miller@op.ac.nz
As first year students, the focus is on
gaining an understanding of pregnancy and childbirth from the perspective of the woman and her family. So rather
than being "attached" to a midwife or other LMC (lead maternity carer), the student "follows-through" up to six
women for the duration of their childbearing experience.
BirthResources
classes at times will have student midwives come to observe the session.

Midwifery programme
Innovative Midwifery Education Programme
Arrives in Wellington Region.
Twenty-five first year midwifery students began their education this month in an innovative degree programme run by
Otago Polytechnic. The three-year degree programme sees the students participating in a blended–delivery programme
incorporating theoretical learning based in online modules, and online "virtual classroom" tutorials, alongside
practice-based experiential learning in community and hospital facilities. Over three years the students will clock
up 4800 hours, 2400 hours of theory and 2400 hours of practical "hands on" experience.
This style of programme delivery is very
flexible, enabling the students to tailor their learning around their family responsibilities, as many of them are
parents themselves. The programme is full-time, but apart from 6 hours of structured tutorial sessions each week the
remainder of the learning can be completed whenever the student wishes. It also enables students to remain in their
own localities for much of the three years, seeking practice experience in their own communities and contributing to
staff retention in rural areas once their education is complete. The students come together every week in small
groups to discuss their practice experiences, and to practice the skills they are learning. They also come together
as one big group, along with four students from Whanganui and seven students from Palmerston North, for three
two-week "intensive" blocks where they cover the curriculum areas which are best addressed "face-to-face", such as
communication skills.
As first year students, the focus is on
gaining an understanding of pregnancy and childbirth from the perspective of the woman and her family. So rather
than being "attached" to a midwife or other LMC (lead maternity carer), the student "follows-through" up to six
women for the duration of their childbearing experience. The level of the student"s involvement is solely determined
by the pregnant woman, but might include attending antenatal visits with her LMC, accompanying her and her partner
to an ultrasound scan appointment or antenatal class, supporting her when she is in labour, and visiting a few times
during the postnatal period to gain an understanding of how a family integrates their new family member. BirthResources
classes at times will have student midwives come to observe the session.
Products and shopping
In this section I list products that I
have found or been told about. My daughters room had a few areas where paint had been chipped off, so instead of re
painting I decided to buy some wall stickers and put them over top. This Christchurch company has some neat kids
ones. See: http://www.imagevault.co.nz/Files/Kids%20Decals-1.pdf.

Welcome to our newsletter. We want this newsletter to be of help for you as parents, with articles of interest, and

would like to have in the newsletter and send us information to include. We would love to add your recipes, links to
helpful websites, birth or parenting stories and helpful hints so we can all learn from each other.

Birth Resources group
get-togethers.
If your class get togethers are not
working, we would like to help. We believe that people often come to classes to meet others, make friends and gain
extra support for when you have your baby. At the end of your class a date/time will be organised. If you are happy
to offer your house let us know. Otherwise we often use Southern Cross Garden Bar and Restaurant, but it is up to
the group to set a location. If using the Southern Cross state 'where' inside you wish to meet as it is a large
venue.
- Location: Downtown Wellington - Cuba
- Address: 35 Abel Smith Street, Te
Aro, Wellington
- Phone number: +64 4 384 9085
- Email Address: cu@thecross.co.nz
- Website: www.thecross.co.nz
We also need someone from the group to
volunteer to send out a reminder email/text. Some groups in the past have even set up their own Facebook page for
their group. If you checked 'Share Contact Details' on the enrolment form you will receive the class list by email.
It is important to let us know if your email address has changed from when you enrolled.
We are looking at organising a postnatal
day with a speaker, so this will also be another way to meet up again and keep networks going. We will email you
when details have been confirmed.
New Baby session
Birth Resources are looking for people
from previous classes who would be happy to come with their baby for an hour to our classes, to allow Denise to do a
baby bath demo. Or talk to the class on what it is like having a new baby, thus sharing your helpful tips. A small
present will be given to say thank-you for your time.

"Antenatal preparation
for labour will help you gain confidence in your own ability to give birth. Attending childbirth classes, reading
books about the labour process, learning relaxation techniques and having a support person or persons to offer
guidance and encouragement are extremely beneficial during your labour. Studies show that women who labour in the

Articles: Cord blood banking
Cord blood banking is an emotive topic,
there is a lot of different views on it and questions about the benefits and then there is the cost to
consider.
Cord blood banking is where umbilical
cord blood is collected at birth and is stored. It is done by using a needle inserted into the cord and drawing it
out into a syringe. It is then stored in liquid nitrogen. In this cord blood are stem cells which can be used for
stem cell transplant for the treatment of some diseases. Most of these diseases are rare, the one most referred to
is leukaemia.

Child
Restraints
This factsheet is a general overview of
what information parents and care givers need to know when children travel in a vehicle. This includes what the
legal requirements are for restraining children in a vehicle, as well as what information you need to know when
renting or purchasing (new and used) child restraints, and the fitting of child restraints into a vehicle.
Child restraints will help keep your
child safe when travelling by car. In fact, New Zealand law requires that all children under five years of age must
use an approved child restraint appropriate for their age and size. Children aged between 5 and 7 must be secured in
a restraint if one is available. To be effective, a restraint must be the right size for your child and you must fit
and use it properly. As the driver, you're responsible for ensuring that any child travelling with you is
appropriately secured. Find out how here: www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/info/students-parents/child-restraints.html

Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Programme
Newborn hearing screening checks whether
your baby hears well. If your baby has a hearing loss, finding it early is good for their language, learning and
social development. When the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme is in place throughout the country, all 21 District
Health Boards will offer screening free of charge.

The female body is designed for pregnancy, but even so having another little person grow inside can cause some

E moe, māmā Sleep Study
The E moe, māmā study is being
undertaken by the Sleep/Wake Research Centre, Massey University Wellington and is funded by the Health Research
Council of New Zealand. The E moe, māmā study aims to investigate how changes to sleep during pregnancy,
and in the weeks after birth, affect women's health and well being. This research will be fundamental in advancing
understanding of the links between maternal sleep, birth outcomes and postnatal mental health.
Currently researchers at Massey University's
Sleep/Wake Research Centre are inviting 1000 pregnant women (500 non-Māori, 500 Māori) in the lower North
Island to participate in this project.
Pregnant women are welcome to enrol for the study if they:

Live in the Lower North Island (Hawkes Bay,
Palmerston North/Mid-Central area, Kapiti Coast, Hutt Valley and Wellington)
Are comfortable enough with English to complete
written questionnaires
Are only carrying one baby (not twins or
multiples).
The research team are working with those involved in antenatal and postnatal care to identify women who might want
to join the study.

Sleep and Postnatal mood changes
Advances have been made in understanding the links between sleep and mood, but this is still a rapidly evolving area.
A small number of studies have looked at the possible relationships between sleep disturbances during pregnancy and
the postnatal period, and postnatal mood changes.
From the very beginning of pregnancy, women experience changes in the quality and quantity of their sleep. Once baby
is born, fragmented sleep and sleep restriction are usual and often severe, but there is limited information on
what is "normal" sleep loss during this timeframe and what is "extreme." There are likely to be multiple factors
that either help or hinder getting good sleep, yet there has been little research aimed at identifying these
external factors, or the consequences of sleep loss for the health and well-being of pregnant women, new mothers or
their families.
This research is not designed to measure the prevalence of postnatal depression. However, it will provide much
needed information on the distribution of depressive symptoms during the antenatal and postnatal period in a large
sample of women using a well validated screening tool. This research will also add to the limited existing
information about sleep changes and mood disturbances for Mâori women.

What to name your baby? This is one of the many

Articles: Travelling
When pregnant and travelling by plane check the
airlines guidelines and ask your LMC if you are fit to
fly. Most
airlines will let you fly with them on domestic flights
up to 38 weeks gestation, and up to 36 weeks on
international
flights. There may be reasons it is unsafe to fly, for
example if you have any risks of bleeding (placenta
previa) or
premature labour. During flights drink plenty of water
and get up and walk or exercise your legs when able.
Also
remember to take your pregnancy record with you.

Helpful Hints
We would love to include your stories or helpful hints
in this section.
So often as Midwifes we hear: "I wish someone had told
me that..." Parenting is like travelling, it is always
best to
ask someone who has been there or is a local.
The books don't always give you that insider
information or those little hints that make things
easier.
Wheat Packs
Wheat packs for labouring women are great especially
for long labours with backache. Try sitting on your
warm wheat
pack in labour (on a Swiss ball), or wrapped around
your lower stomach or back. Most Hospitals won't allow
hot water
bottles for labouring women in case they burn
themselves.
Wheat packs can be used in cots to keep it warm pre bed
time during Winter, removing it before putting the baby
down
to sleep. I know I go to sleep quicker if my bed is
warm at night, and it means babies don't use up glucose
stores
trying to increase their temperature which is important
if baby is premature. Wheat bags can also be used for
older
children for ear-ache which can be a problem during
teething. Put 1/4 cup of water in microwave at same
time as you
warm the wheat bag to produce steam this stops the
wheat from going on fire and check temperature is not
too hot
before using.
BirthResources has Wheat Bags for sale. See our Sale
Products section of the newsletter.

What has been in the newspapers recently
Dads told to stay away from delivery room
For many men, attending the birth of a child is a momentous and emotional occasion. However, one of the world's
leading obstetricians says the father's presence can lead to his partner needing a caesarean delivery, and even to
marriage break-ups and mental illness.
Michel Odent, a childbirth specialist, also believes the labour can be longer, more painful and more complicated
because the mother senses his anxiety and becomes nervous.
Read the rest here.
Other thoughts on the Dads at birthEric from DIYFather.com wrote:
Odent has some interesting statements and some very far reaching ones as well.
First I'll tackle the easiest, whether a man is present or not in the delivery room has nothing to
do with divorce,
unless they act like complete ass.
DIYFather is about helping men become more confident and competent fathers (and husbands, I
hope), Odent talks about
a time long gone where birthing was only women's domain, however back then men were hunters and
protectors. At the
core this may still be true, however it just happens to look different now. I believe a well
prepared and supportive
man will still fill the role as the protector and assist the mother in the birthing process
giving her a sense of
safety and security to give birth.
There may be some truth that there has been a change in the child birth process, and as a
consequence there has been an
increase in caesarean births, however I don't think this has anything to do with the presence of
the father, but more
to do with the way we are living our lives and abruptness of preparation and education, with all
the best intentions
of antenatal classes and midwives, people feel like they just don't have the time anymore.
In response to Mary Newborns comments about men feeling under pressure to attend, that maybe
true, however with a
growth in fatherhood support organisations like DIYFather, we will see more men not pressured,
but
prepared at the
birthing suit.
Also in reality, when it comes down to the wire if the father is not up-to-it, then he will
leave, the mother will be
too busy to care anyway at the time.
They can talk about it afterwards, to mend any hurt feelings. Communication is key to any
successful relationship,
not whether the father was at the birth or not.

As a midwife for 10 years/childbirth educator/doula for 20 years I see a huge benefit of having
the dad in the birth room if the woman is comfortable with that. Midwives know that one of the
biggest fears for a labouring women is 'of being alone' in the labour room. The partner may feel
a little bit uncomfortable to start with, but not for long generally. I have witnessed most
relationships grow during this golden opportunity for the partner to provide nurturing and caring
in an intimate and gentle loving way. The relationship bonds are also stretched and strengthened
immediately after the birth when the couple make the transition into parenthood as they gaze into
their newly born baby's eyes.
Pam Harden a childbirth educator has done an assignment in which she researched Men in the labour room.
Do they want to be there? One of her conclusions was:
Antenatal classes should include discussion and information directed primarily at men and
provide them with opportunities in the group to share and work together on issues of specific
importance meeting their needs.

Articles: The Stages of Labour
When labour starts there are no flashing lights to say this is labour. With some people it can take awhile for the
fact that they are in labour to sink in, as it can just start with a few cramping pains like period like pains and
for others it can start in a rush and you go straight into full on strong
contractions. http://howto.yellow.co.nz/parenting/childbirth-pregnancy/the-stages-of-labour/
